When shopping for a unicorn horn for your horse or pony, you may have come across Etsy listings for resin horns costing as little as $25-60. This might make you wonder if the products on WishPony.com are overpriced, but the difference is really due to a very important issue that you should consider before buying a resin horn for your child or horse.
Resin Unicorn Horns are deadly in the wrong hands
Has your horse or pony ever tried to scratch an itch on its face by rubbing against you or your children?
Has your horse or pony ever made a sudden head movement when spooked or excited?
Has your horse or pony ever tossed or shaken its head?
Resin horns may seem realistic and cost less because they can be mass produced by casting in molds, but this economy may cost you a lot in the long run. Anyone who spends enough time with horses must be aware that accidents can happen even with the safest horses. And because unicorn safety is not a part of traditional equestrian education, resin horns can present an unusual and serious hazard to everyone especially when children and non-professional horseman are present.
If not handled carefully, a horse or pony wearing a hard, pointy unicorn horn can accidentally impale people as well as other horses. A horse refusing a jump or backing up suddenly can throw a rider onto its head. Horses often bump and rub their heads on people especially when sweaty or bored, which can be extremely dangerous to children and inexperienced persons who pet and kiss unicorns with resin horns. People using resin horns when riding in groups can also poke the eyes of other horses and cause serious injury in collisions and accidents.
Businesses who can only make resin horns won’t tell you these things, but will distribute sharp horns to be used in petting zoos, pony parties, and child photography. Before you decide to save a little money by buying a $25 resin horn for your child’s birthday or for a seemingly harmless photo shoot, stop to consider how much more it might potentially cost you in injuries and peace of mind.
There are also non-resin horns made of Sculpey (often sold as “PVC”) which are just as dangerous.
WishPony.com Soft Child-Safe Unicorn Horns
In 2005, we invented the soft unicorn horn so that children all over the world can safely pet and ride unicorn horses or ponies. Instead of being copies cast in molds, our horns are individually hand made by processes that can take as long as a few hours to several days (for a leather Unicorn Browband™). Therefore, our products must necessarily cost more than mass-produced horns. We also offer dozens of customization options and everything from invisible straps for photography to sturdy browbands for athletic riding, so you can design a completely a unique unicorn horn for your unique needs and tastes.
Our soft horns will stand up straight so long has they are not crushed or bent during storage and will last you for years if you supervise your horse properly to prevent it rubbing its horn on objects while tied or bored. And though a soft horn may be occasionally damaged in accidents, it will cost you less to replace it than to replace a child’s eye or your own.
WishPony.com Unicorn Horns are Realistic
We have received feedback from customers over the years saying that our unicorn horns are so realistic that children believed they were meeting a real live unicorn. You can ensure that your unicorn ensemble looks completely natural by choosing a horn in a color that is related to your horse’s color (e.g. black horn for black horse, ivory for cremello, etc.). Our Unbridled Unicorn Horn™ and Natural-Look Unicorn Horns™ even come with invisible or near invisible attachments so people won’t see an obviously strapped-on horn. If ordering a Unicorn Browband™, you can choose a browband color that matches your bridle for a more formal ensemble.
Resin Horns on WishPony.com
Wishpony.com sometimes lists unique hand-dyed resin horns on leather browbands for equine professionals such as stunt riders and those who perform at a distance from the general public. If you wish to buy one of our resin horns, you must indicate that you are a professional or very experienced equestrian and agree to strict safety rules which include constant supervision and not allowing people to pet or cuddle your unicorn’s face. But for professionals who engage in potentially dangerous sports or ride and drive horses in public, we also recommend that you order a soft unicorn browband which now comes in leather for a very elegant presentation. We will not sell resin horns to pony parties.
